All that said, still the best hotel I've found in Santa Cruz. This would have been a 5 star review if it weren't for the HVAC system. If no one is in the room, the HVAC doesn't turn on and it gets very stuffy, this also happens when you're sleeping. I think this is partially due to the motion activation that was mentioned on the room information card. This HP uses wall units which are not powerful enough to cool the room even with very moderate exterior temps (less than 80-85). Lowlight for me, for sure, is the HVAC system. Pool is a pool, not all HP's have them, so nice to see it! This one was over run with children though, so couldn't really relax too hard. Front desk folks are very courteous and acknowledged my status / gave me my perks without me having to ask. The staff was great! I don't know what it is about HP's and their valets, but this is the second time in a row that the valet stood out. Modern utilitarian feel, nothing feels / seems cheap, but you're also only really getting a place to crash and a grab-and-go snack / breakfast. If you've stayed at a Hyatt Place before, you know what to expect. I received an email asking to rate my stay, I responded with all the information and the hotel manager basically said "too bad". I really though I would chalk this up to bad experience but at $189/night and this being a HYATT I though it was not acceptable. I really did not understand this and told the front desk and I was told that the hotel was full and the a/c was operating at full blast. We turned on the air conditioning to help, and that's when the floor started shaking violently that the beds were shaking. The beds were incredibly uncomfortable, so uncomfortable that my daughter developed a stress-induced migraine. We thought this was more suitable, until we went to sleep. We opened the hotel room door and saw we overlooked a parking lot, as two females travelling we thought this was unacceptable, we asked for a new room and was given one overlooking the street on second floor. I was given a key, and told that valet parking was mandatory: Expedia said "parking available" which I naively thought parking was available to hotel guests, rather than mandatory valet parking of $19/day. I checked with credit card rep and was told that no charges were made. At check-in, I was told that the stay was not paid, and a credit card was taken this was odd as I had a receipt from Expedia that stated "paid in full". I like Santa Cruz area and wanted to show my daughter the beauty. I read reviews and booked through Expedia. This was a trip planned months in advance to celebrate my 2 yr mark of positive response to cancer treatment. We stayed here during the first week of October.
